Our outside world holds all different dangers for eyes; however, not one season presents more challenges than the summer months. Whether it be chemicals in pools, flying grit from yard work or sunlight; there are many ways to sear delicate eye tissue. Follow some of the guidelines below and save your eyes from harm this summer.
- Wear Sun Protection– The corneas of your eyes can be burned by the sun’s rays so wearing protective eye wear is incredibly important. The most damaging of the sun’s rays are ultraviolet rays which are classified as UVA and UVB. Most sunglasses protect against UVB and if they protect against UVA it will say so on the lenses. Too much exposure to ultraviolet rays can accelerate the formation of contracts. Studies show that people who stay in the sun tend to get cataracts eight to ten years before those who are mostly in the shade or indoors.
- Wear Eye Protection While Doing Home Projects– When weed whacking or mowing the yard, put proper eye protection on you and your loved ones to avoid a flying rock accident. Eye protection is not sunglasses or reading glasses either, proper eye protection would be professional quality goggles from a home supply store. Corneal lacerations can also take place from chopping wood, hammering nails, sawdust or anything that could fly around.
- Protecting Eyes During Sports– One good rule of thumb is the larger the ball, the less likely the eye injury. A basketball or soccer ball is unlikely to injure eyes however golf balls, baseballs or softballs can do great damage. According to the U.S. Eye Injury Registry, 5 percent of all eye injuries result from baseballs. Paintball is another bad sport for eyes. Commercial paintball locations require eye protection however some playing paintball in the backyard or field, may not put on eyewear. Most sports stores sell plastic, shields or masks appropriate for different sports.
